• Problem with my seat cover
Not sure the seat construction, but it looks like it’s just too loose of patterning. Almost look like if you pulled down on the piece in the picture it would tighten up.
  • I just finished this 1957 Chevy Belair.
@Warren Wing thanks! I’m working on the door panels next for a 57 and was considering what route to go. Original nail strips or auveco clips. Now they are just screwed to the door with trim screws. Looks terrible.

What did you use to attach the door panels? The original style nails and lower clip or new spring clips?
  • Sewing Traning.
For sewing cechaflo has great videos on YouTube or for purchase. The luckyneedle also has some on YouTube and for purchase. Sid chavers also has classes for purchase. As for machines and how they work, I’m not sure
  • Scanning patterns
@Steven M I use to have solidworks but no longer do. But I have been making some chipboard patterns by hand for audi seats. Holding theyll come in handy.
  • Sewing Rounded Inserts
@Steven M I have issues with this also, can you post some pics sometime? I’m a visual learner and not sure I understand your explanation.
  • Scanning patterns
Yeah this would be handy if you did production runs, and I have thought about it for some seats. You’d almost have to have a scanner of some sort, but I think it could save some time once you get use to running the program
  • How are your shops doing during this pandemic?
Unfortunately for my location. The population and lakes around me are small. Bass boats and pontoons are pretty much all that’s around me.
  • How are your shops doing during this pandemic?
@Michael OdenI can’t answer for others here, but I have terrible experiences with boats in general and just no longer care for them, even outside of upholstery. So maybe I go in with the wrong mindset and they just seem to fight me from start to finish. But I live in rural Iowa where boats aren’t used year round or in the same
numbers as ocean areas or warmer climates. So the boats are usually super warn out, hand me downs, that they got for cheap or free and want to spend as little as possible. But that’s me, people probably love them and have great experiences with boat. Some of the captains chairs and designs aren’t easy and take some skill to get done.
  • Submitting Help Questions
    Sorry Fred,

No mocking at all. Sorry it came that way. I read it as if you were asking if it would be more beneficial to do something on a narrowed down topic, not saying it would help you if we narrowed it down, so you could help easier. That was misread on my part. With the misreading, I added a question as a topic to narrow down on. Hopefully no hard feelings. You’ve reached out to me plenty and I appreciate the help.
  • Recognize this work?
I’d contact the builder, he would know I’m sure.

Are you thinking on here, or for other book ideas? I feel like the options would be endless. One thing that’s generic that I never see addressed in great detail is how to get edges to lay flat when wrapping around the backside of certain items. One that came to mine was an arm rest/door pull of a 1941 Buick I just did. I sewed it with the seams as the original were done. As you get to the part where the handle meets the door panel, the leather was just folded and wrapped around the end. Then the arm rest is screwed to the door, and the door panel is plush enough to “hide” the not smooth folds. I tried to cut as much excess material off as possible and pie cut to remove the folds. It looks good in the end, but on items such as this, similar where you just wrap a panel and the material bunches. What are ways to get it smooth. Where a plush door panel may not be an option, and it would look bad?
  • CNC Sewing Setups: Brands/Prices/Reviews/Pros-Cons?
I’m a one man shop also. I’ve thought about patterning seats myself. The but the ones I think I’ll get 1 of, I get 10. So I never know which to make actual patterns of. I do have some Audi seats I patterned. I see a few shops on Instagram that use a cnc laser to etch logos into leather or suede, along with cutting material. Looks real slick. But not sure I’m to that place yet.
  • How are your shops doing during this pandemic?
I’ve made a few calls and email to places in the past that may need some upkeep, while they are down. Gyms, bars, restaurants. Some have paid off, others not. But I’ve had boats coming in and some long term projects. As much as I hate boats, I take them. My wife is about to kill me too, I get so frustrated lol
  • Metal meet
I’ve thought about a cars and coffee thi NV a once all this blows over. Just cause that’s what I’m into. May work there but would have to haul my machine and everything. Which could be a pain.

Here are some thoughts on this idea that maybe people could have insight on.

Unless you’re close to a shop that sells equipment, and could get the allow them to be “tested” so there are enough machines for everyone. I’m a one man shop with enough room and machines for just that lol.

At the metal meets there is usually a few days before, and a few days after. Shops that come and do seminars for money. More hands on, more detailed than just everyone helping everyone. Usually focuses on one thing. For this you could have someone who does restoration work only before, then after someone who does more custom work. A shop that really excels in something.

Most food is by donation, meaning people who come donate money and the hosts grill, have pop and chips, etc. (this is by the meets I have been too) lodging on the individual.

I don’t think this idea is out of question, and @Fred Mattson May have more input in this as he’s done similar before. Maybe I’m over thinking it.
  • Y'all ever see a clear convertible top??
I like how they still put the red trim around where the rear window would be!
  • Windlace
    That’s it thank you
  • Door Panel - Foam Underlay?
I think you make a wooden shape for most of it and use close cell foam over the wood to soften it.
  • rugged use fabrics?
Will it be open like dirt and things will get into it more often than normal? Idk how well it cleans but I’ve used mordura materials for crane seats. Nice weave used in a lot of over the road trucks. Seems to last well for that industry where they live in the seats.
  • Lazy employees
hahaha at least they stayed. If I left for 30 min my daughter wouldn’t even be in the shop anymore.
