So I stepped up in machines which has raised some questions. I have been doing marine canvas and upholstery for about six years, a little auto but not much. I had a smaller walking foot machine in my basement, we have grown and have been doing all kinds of trim work out of a shop now. I upgraded to an NC 1508NH recently and love it. It created some questions though. I have a lot more choices in stitch length, needle size and thread than before. What is best or what do you all use for marine vinyl upholstery. I always use a polyester UV thread so thats not my question.
I had been using a needle of 20 (135x17), thread 92, and a stitch length of probably 5mm
The NC is set up with a needle of 24 (123-14), thread 138 and lots of stitch length options
Just curios its a new world with my NC
24 size needle is gigantic for normal sewing. That size runs 210- 270 thread. Regular sewing uses size 69 , I can't remember the needle size for that thread. I'll have to check.
Ya the whole seemed gigantic and not good for the vinyl work. It looked good with that 138 thread for. My canvas work though. Probably best to go back to a 18 or 20 with some 92 thread for vinyl. Anyone have thoughts on stitch length?
I use the same as Geoff. Cechaflo has an exelent video on this subject, watch it, and it will explain everything you will ever need to know. Very informative.
