Hi... First want to say thanks for letting me join this forum. I'm just starting out and am very new to upholstering. I'm inspired by the amazing work I have seen on here, and I'm really trying to aim at producing quality work. Unfortunately, I don't have a mentor or someone to learn from. I had a short training course, and then spent every minute I can in my workshop... mainly practicing headrests.
I have a question though about machines. My first machine that I bought is a Durkopp Adler 1767 which I absolutely love. Its great to use and easy to get nice stitching. I've spent hours working on VW Transporter T 6.1 headrests... which aren't easy to master... but I am making progress.
I am thinking of buying a Juki cylinder arm machine as I thought it would make it a little easier to do things like arm rest, headrests, top stitching... I know a Post bed machine would possibly be better still, but I also have an interest in making motorcycle sadle bags and tool bags.
So, my question is... do many people in the auto upholstery world use cylinder machines... or could I be just about to waste a lot of cash.
Sorry if it appears to be a stupid question but to sage advice would be appreciated
Hi Chris, welcome onboard. I am going through a similar scenario - trying to master the top stitch on the armrests of the T5/6’s. I have recently purchased a new DA 867 but also looking at a post bed machine that can manage the headrests and I must say much more tricky armrests. The post bed machines are not cheap and not at all justified for my occasional use but I have just take receipt of a DA presser foot that just might save the day. Take a look at College Sewing. It cost over £100 as you have to buy the dogs. Yet to experiment, but massively cheaper than a new machine! I tried a half-foot but that didn’t help. DA presser feet are mighty expensive but if you can find the appropriate accessory, worth it.
