I want to take the plastic of a 1990 BMW dashboard to use as a pattern. Do people do this or make their own pattern? I took a bit off at the side and bits of the foam have come off leaving little holes, some big. I was wondering if I can fill the holes with putty/expanding foam and sand flat. Or am I wasting my time?

I usually leave the original intact as a base. Make a pattern with 16g clear plastic or template plastic. Clean the dash with acry-solv , sand well and acry-solv wash again. If the dash has cracks fill with two part epoxy and pad with a thin layer of sanded landau foam.
