I’ve recently had an enquiry about a T2 campervan that needs a new headlining. My technique for measuring out the material is to use clear plastic sheeting and suspend it from the bows with tape. I remember where I used to work, my boss would measure the gap in the centre and taper it towards the edges. I’ve had a go in the past on a Beetle but my taper was too narrow and made it impossible to install. I was wondering if anyone have any tips or tricks on how to measure them more accurately, particularly the tapers. And does the measuring method work for more complicated shapes such as a 1950s Ford Pop or is the clear plastic method better for those. Thanks in advance
if you dont have the old headliner for the type 2 id just buy a new replacement one which will be more cost effective from west coast metric or vw heritage , as for the 103e pop i have template for that and sell kits
Thanks for the replies. I brought that as an ebook to get a better idea on headliners but couldn’t find what I was after. I also watched the Meca guys on YouTube and they allowed an inch taper but it appeared to be a case of let’s try it and see how it goes.
I do typically use pre-sewn camper headliners, the issue with this one is that it’s a converted commercial and he doesn’t want the windows removed so we’re having to plan it out. Are the Pop kite available to purchase online?
The last one I did I put the bows up where I wanted them then measured the gaps at the center, I measured where I wanted it to start curving down, I measured the gaps at the sides and the distance from the curve start to the curve end.Front and rear ends I made a rough template, I also added a few inches onto each side. Not sure If this is the correct way but it worked ok.This was for a ford anglia 105e.

So far I have ordered all my headliners from companies that have the patterns and correct materials. I have seen shops that will purchase a premade headliner for a pattern and cut it apart to make a new one from a material that isn't available. This would also allow you to to a loose install to see what adjustments need to be made to fit the specific vehicle.
