Wondering what people are using as fixtures for stitching steering wheels. I tried making one, it works ok, but I'd love to see what else might be out there. Open to DIY or commercially available.
Try Coachtrim LLC located in Danbury Connecticut. They used to sell one that they designed and had made for sale. High quality piece and works perfectly. I saw it personally while attending one of their leather workshops a few years ago. They used to have it listed on their website along with a few other items. I would give Johann a call there to see if they still have them. 203-743-6556
I use a scrap rack from any car. Welded plate on the bottom to either clamp to bench or put 56lb weight on, then add threaded bar to spline end so it takes any type of depth wheel using spacers to accommodate variances.
Add also a grub screw into top with Allen head and key to stop it free spinning like a brake.
I was actually just talking about doing this with my buddy yesterday. Unfortunately he just sent a BMW to the scrap last week he could have pulled for me. I'll keep my eye out for another, but would kind of like something a little less bulky/ easier to store when I'm not using it.
I wasn't able to find anything from the other two places listed above. Coachtrim didn't have much on their site, and after digging thru carbonwheel61 on Instagram I didn't come across anything.
Here's the one I ended up making based off the pics of Retro Retrim's jig. I'll probably end up buying a better vise down the road, I just grabbed a cheapo off Amazon to try it out. Less than $30 and maybe an hour worth of work to make it. Can't wait to use it!
