Panel Board Shelf above Upholstery Table

    Is this a good idea or bad idea??

    I have 8' ceilings in a smaller shop area so I am limited in where I can (safely) store panel board. I am thinking about making a swinging shelf ( -approx. 30"D x 52"W ) hung from the ceiling to store up to 10 sheets or so. I am thinking on using chain ( like is used on porch swings) to hang it from using eyelets on the frame and the rafters. Has anyone done something similar, -and if so, do you care to share your thoughts and experiences?

    Well . . . Gravity still works and having something so big overhead may prove to be a hazard. I built a shelf 8 inches under the surface of my cutting table. I can still store material under the workbench and my panel board is safely tucked under the table, flat and ready to use.

    can we get the deminsons on your table. im working out of a 1 car garage and space is tight. right now i have a make shift table made with pallets but soon im plan to rebuild it.

    Thanks Fred. I have a table that we built to store such items, ...and I thought we had a good place to store the panel boards too until it got filled up with rolls of piece goods and other stuff. Now the panels get stuff piled on top of them making it a chore to get at them or to put back a piece. Hence the reason for the shelf. FWIW, below are some pix of my table during final construction.

    Kris, if you are limited in space, consider using a folding ping-pong table.

    I've worked out of my small 2 car garage for 15 years. I have many many things suspended from the rafters. The main thing when you do this is to be sure your rafters can take the extra load as they were not designed for that purpose. I reinforced mine with 3/8 cable to strengthen everything

    I built two shelves on an angle under one of my tables which accommodates both sizes perfectly. Easy to drop in the panels as well as removing with the aid of a flat plier. After years of various storage methods, this seems to work the best.
