Wondering what everyone’s techniques are for wrapping door panels to get a nice flush finish on the sides when there are multiple layers of leather.
I make custom panels out of PVC and when I put the insert panels in I am getting some bulk where the insert wraps around the side and back of the main panel. There are 3 layers of leather in those spots so I’m wondering what I can do differently to make everything flush. Any help is much appreciated.
Simple as notching the edge of your panel to match the thickness and # layers that you are wrapping around the panel, then under cut the material you are wrapping around the back.
I’m using foamed PVC sheets. I buy the 3mm. I’m guessing it’s cheaper than ABS and it’s waterproof so definitely better than the old school upholstery board. Super light weight, strong, easy to work with. You should be able to find it at sign supply warehouses
How are you attaching the foamed PVC sheets to the steel top rails? Staples, Glue, Rivets? DO the foamed PVC sheets hold staples well when you're wrapping an edge? TIA-Mike
I use rivets. the pvc seems to hold staples well but I usually just scuff the edges I'm wrapping and glue it.
I'd actually like to use thin wood door cards because sanding and breathing in pvc is probably terrible for you- the guys at Gabes custom interiors use RV interior panels. They are backed with vinyl and super thin. If anyone knows where to find something like that I would really appreciate it
This panel was made for a 1963 Buick LeSabre convertible. New original vinyl was applied over waterproof panel board. All the seams were sewn to make it look like the original die-electric stamping.
*Just a note- The owner of this 1963 Buick LeSabre received a scored 395 out of 400 at the National Buick Meet this year. I am so proud to be able to restore these cars for my customers.
