I came across a discussion thread on Reddit where car enthusiasts were talking about their DIY experiences repairing or installing auto upholstery. Pretty funny stuff. It's also awesome to see how many walked away with a new appreciation for our craft...
Here are some of their comments :rofl::rofl:

"I'm replacing the seat covers on my 95 m3 with some premade ones I bought online. The fit and quality are good but holy shit are they a pain in the ass to put on. My hands feel like they're about ready to fall off after snipping off the hog rings on one seat. Stretching the covers and tucking them into the crevices is a royal pita too. Dont get me started on vader seat head rests. You reupholsters have my respect. And I definitely understand why it's so damn expensive."

"I agree completely. I attempted the headliner in my 99 M3 before getting a quote at a local shop for $500. Well worth the money. Came out way better than I could have done."

"I redid the headliner in my Mk4 shitbox commuter, saved myself like $150 by doing it myself. First time I’ve done something myself where I thought, wow I definitely should have paid someone to do this."

"I sewed my steering wheel cover on and it took me about 4-5 hours. My fingers felt like they were going to be sliced off by the thread since I had to pull and hold the thread to keep it all tight. Looks decent, but not perfect."

"Work the cushion line at toyota for a while, spent 4/12hours a day stretching and wrapping seats from cloth to leather. Was the strongest/weakest my forearms have ever been."

"Worked for Lincoln Mercury back in the 80's, these rich bitches would bring stuff in under warranty, saying things like the scuff in the LEATHER was there when I got the car, (as they flash their talons), trying to replace a leather seat cover from the factory is like trying on a three year olds clothes."

"I put katzkin leather seat covers in my NB, with seat heaters. I agree, the hog rings were so much more of a pain than I anticipated. And I didn't really do the best job, the fit is okay, but there are a couple of places where I just couldn't get it cinched down properly, so it's not as tight as it should be."
What I don’t get is that why do people think Upholsterer‘s are pricey or expensive or too expensive what I hear ...have you ever been to a mechanic lately a plumber a dentist we don’t work for free!.... We are a trade we deserve to be paid I worked for way too long not getting paid what I was worth
