I have a job coming up to repair a convertible top on a 2001 Mercedes. The top is in great condition, aside from a seam has come unglued in one place. It's opened up about 6 inches.

I want to attempt to reglue the top back together in that spot. Does anyone have any advice on what kind of adhesive I should use?

We use windshield urethane. Lots of prepping and masking as it’s messy.

Are you talking about the glass or say a heat seal like one on a CLk that always goes bad?

Thanks Jesse! I was hoping to avoid urethane, i just have to look at the tube and I'm covered in it haha. But seems like a good option

Robert, yes the heat seal is what I mean! I didn't think to snap a picture of it before my customer left

When I do them, I make sure to inform the customer there is no warranty what so ever. It’s a temporary fix at best till they can replace the top. And I will only do them if they are not separating more than just the bottom half.

Do the right thing and replace the top, the heat seal failure is just the obvious and noticeable wear and tear. The rest of the top is worn out . Please do not waste your time and your customers money trying to patch this. Replace it with a quality top , stand up to do the right thing , worked for me for over 30 years.

Okay shoot, I'm leaning more now towards calling him and turning down the job. The top really is in decent shape and it's only opened up about 8 inches, but I see everyone's point and I don't want this job to come back to haunt me. Thanks for all the advice!!

ditto.. do not repair replace only! those repairs are for the customers to try themselves, Then when it fails (because it will) you can sell them a new top with a guarantee!
You don't want any rework attached to your name, regardless of any warnings to the customer. In the customers eye they took it to you to fix it and it failed, there is no up side for you, there are only possible negative reviews

I am seeing more and more of these MB tops coming in with seams over the back window delaminating. It is not our fault that Mercedes didn't stitch that seam before they heat seamed it.

I won't try to reglue it either. Most of my customers won't ante up the money for a new top on these 15 to 18 year old cars. I assume they are ending up at the auto auctions.
