I really struggle with sewing visors. What thread and needle size do you use? My base is chipboard, 1/8" foam and whatever the material is. My machine has a hard time sewing through 4 layers of material and 2 layers of foam and chipboard. It is especially hard to do the first back stitch neatly. Maybe my machine is limiting? I have an Artisan compound walking foot (basically like a consew). Also what is the trick to getting the stitch high up on the visor when the bracket is not removable? Any tips on visor construction would be appreciated! This is my first post :)

My machine has a hard time with them too. Turn the wheel by hand, feeding and guiding with your other hand. Dont try to get right up to ends of them. Its a visor not a bucket seat. Also i just leave the threads long and tuck them in instead of backstitching. Pull them through to the inside of visor add a drop of glue to help your peace of mind.

I’ve got a half foot that one side is off of it and I finish my stitch at the bracket if it won’t come off that let’s you get up closer than if you start there

Your chipboard maybe a little thick. They sell a thinner board that looks like stencil board in that it stiff but thin and advertised for sun visors. Your machine shouldn't have a problem sewing it with the foam and fabric. I use it all the time.

There is a chapter on headliner and visor construction in my Interior Restoration book. There are details on how to do the bound edge and self edge finishes.6poesa4wm6wbn7v0.jpg
