Okay so my trusty multimeter is now 20 something years old, and it's time for a new one. I did buy a cheap (very very cheap) meter to replace it but after a week I had to throw it in the garbage. I need to buy a new one but would like some suggestions from my pals on THR.
What do you guys n gals use? I'm okay with spending some $ on it if its good quality. Hopefully something that has auto. specific functions. I wont be diagnosing AC or fuel injection systems, so I won't need a pro mechanics meter but something close to it anyway.
One of my reg customers let me borrow a fancy probe a while back looked something like this
It worked good, it didn't have digital readout like the pic. Maybe something like this would work? Just thought I'd get some suggestions here before I spend days researching the web for what I want.
There are many different levels of multimeters available. I use a Fluke -114. It is very basic and cost less than $150.
Purchasing a quality tool that will last a lifetime is a great value because it will last a long time without failing. This saves time, money and the hassle of finding a new one every couple of years.
When I was a mechanic I loved my power probe and then my power probe 3(with voltmeter) , however now I do upholstery I've only used it once in the last 5 years.Power probes do make light work of basic fault finding however with modern computer controlled cars you do need to be carefull you don't let the smoke out of stuff.
power probe is legit. Unless you are a mechanic seeking out parasitic draws it will do what you want. they are computer safe the won’t deploy air bags and have phenomenal attachments. if it’s a true multimeter you seek Fluke is bullet proof.
