• Sharpies
@Matt Sonnenburg I was always told the same thing and like you see it all the time amd wonder myself. Never think to ask. I’ve actually had a friend help me do some layout and sewing for a boat not knowing he used sharpie A few months later bled through everywhere and had to replace half the boat. Been scared to since.

I use a bandsaw as well. I actually use a wood blade in it. @Chris Viningwhat blade Doyle use? Wasn’t sure if a metal finner tooth blade would work better. I just used what the saw had in it.

Having 2 sisters in psychology and me starting school in this field we learned a lot about colors and how they effect the brain. If you’re looking for colors that help improve you mind and body here’s some reading.

  • Custom German square weave carpet help
I see a lot of posts of people who use relicate leather and it’s always top notch. I know cechaflo just did a carpet video like a week ago. Shows the process pretty well. From what I was taught, jute is what goes under the carpet. This gives it a soft feel yet hides the bead details of the floor and other small imperfections. Whether or not this is the lastest way I can’t answer. I think the binding is all preference as what the customer wants.

@Matt SonnenburgI can believe it. I talked with Fred briefly on the phone a while and he was full of knowledge and a great help

Okay makes perfect sense now! Thanks @Fred Mattson also just ordered your book! Can’t wait for it to come.

Fred when you say remove the foam from the seam allowance. Do you mean sew the stitch, come back and remove the foam after, or do you have .5” or whatever the seam allowance you use , smaller foam on back of the material sew you can sew and it’s already gone?
  • How to approach businesses? Especially boat places.
I agree with @Peter Pittel it’s not worth it. I have worked with competitors before. Knowing it’s something they are more familiar with than myself and recommend them and vis versa. Or needed an emergency supply. Talking bad just shows you’re true character and businesses realize this.

@Brian Magee Jr are you wondering about the llc aspect of this? I did this myself as I was advised. Saying that way if anything happened they can only come after my business and not me personally. I’m small enough that an llc works for myself.

That’s great work Duane. @Duane Ballard what did you use under the leather? Regular sew foam or something else? Looks very crisp

Seeing this type of material reminded me that there is a person on instagram that goes by gtifabric from Colorado I believe. He doesn’t post a lot or go into much detail but one pic is of a giant modern loom for weaving material and it’s making reproduction gti material. Maybe he’s gonna get into production. Idk?

@Cesar Chavez I was just rewatching your videos of doing the racing seat. It’s a great go to video. Can you explain what you mean by sew the straight edge piece to the rounded piece? Are you saying have the straight edge part on top while going through the machine?

@Jim Bentley If I’m on the same page, I try to do what you’re saying by getting the seams to lay flat on the same side as best as I can. Doesn’t always work for the situation.

@Keith Mayne I originally thought along the same lines. I tried to adjust the seam allowance ao it was all laying the same once installed, that didn’t work so I trimmed off most of the allowance. After that then I figured I was doing something else wrong and posted. I’m sure a lot of it has to do with experience and skill along with the advice you’ve all given. I’m going to start with removing the foam from the seam allowance.

@Keith MayneI like the fabric, did they say where they purchased it? How did the quality seem?
  • How to approach businesses? Especially boat places.
I’m small change in this aspect but I just ask someone at the business who I should talk to and explain briefly what you’re doing. From there I talk to said person and explain in more detail what I’m doing and what I’m after. Maybe they have someone, maybe not. They usually like to see example work even if just in pictures. If they’re interested I tell them what I can bring to the table. While showing projects I mention what I charged showing a before and after. Making sure to often slip in every project varies and so does the price. Also, if it’s a shop that could bring multiple projects I like to go in while having an incentive for them based upon what they can bring to you. The more they bring the more I like to help them out. Not cut my own throat by any means, but maybe add a smaller mark up on material vs a one off job. If they do have someone, I ask if they are happy and this may be a bit snoopy but ask what they charge usually. This helps me to see if I’m in the right ball park at all for the area with what others are charging. I’m sure more experienced people with chime in with better advice. Also, I always leave a card or 2 just in case. Sometimes something goes wrong and they think about hey they stopped in I wonder if I have their card still.

@Fred Mattsonjust to clarify do I remove the foam on both the boxing and the top? Or just on or the other and only for the seam allowance?

@William Duffy yeah I’ve been getting better at using scraps and trying it before I give it a go on the material. I honestly see both ways. It varies from piece to piece and how comfortable it feels going through the machine. Sometimes I even switch how I sew starting at the center point of a project. Sew boxing to top half the way one way and then flip and sew the opposite. Not the best way to sew something I’m sure.

Yes you are correct on both accounts. It’s 1/2 on top 1/4 on the sides. I will give this a try. Thank you Fred.

Cool video. What’s the white tape/shrink wrap stuff he’s using to make the pattern. I could see me liking something like that. I often use tape as a similar function.

  • Mouse Hole
sorry. I should have said more detail. The one way I was told was like above. On the side your fabric would stick to, but tape over the holes. Put the tape one direction then another layer 90 degrees to the first. Use fiberglass and resin. The resin will soak through the glass and fill in the void. And can be sanded to match later. If there’s a low still use filler or more resin. I haven’t done this myself but had a guy tell me when filling the dome light hole this is what he did.
  • Mouse Hole
I’ve heard of fiberglassing over the holes on the backside of the board that way it doesn’t create hump where the material goes.
