• Magnets instead of clips
Oh that's awesome! I didn't know that they could be attached with screws like that. Thanks Andy
  • Metal motorcycle seat pan
Use glue to attach the cover and then pop some rivets around the perimeter especially near the seams. Afterwards you can clean up the bottom of the seat pan by gluing a piece of black trunk liner on the underside of the pan.
  • Auto Carpet
Although I cover the floor in dynomat, I still use jute over top of it to smooth out the floorboard. It creates a better look in my opinion with a layer of jute in between the carpet and the floor. I order my carpet from ACC by the yard when I can't order one already molded. They have two types. Ask for the carpet without the plastic backing because it's much easier to work with.
  • Magnets instead of clips
How do you guys attach them to the panels? What can you use that's strong enough to prevent them from pulling off?

That looks amazing Duane! How long did that seat take if you don't mind me asking?

That go kart is so bad ass @Chris Vining Where did you get the body for that?

Sweet! Nice job Don. I like how you kept the bench seat. It seems like everyone is swapping them out for buckets. I miss benches
  • Staplers
I have a Fasco and a few other no name staplers. I mainly use 3/8" crown long nose and my 1/2" crown snub nose for most projects.
  • Patterning techniques
I use the actual material I'm upholstering the seat with and pin it on the very edges but if I need to pin the material anywhere other than on the selvage I'll use scrap vinyl for patterning.

That's the coolest display From a shop that I've ever seen. Great job!
  • Upholstering plastic
Also notice how the upper french seam is located back from the edge of the plastic. Most french seams would be more forward so that the initial stitch is located at the very edge of the plastic. By recessing it back it looks much cleaner. Very cool technique!
  • Button making...
Good tips guys! I've had trouble with torn vinyl on buttons. I'll definitely give them a try. Thanks
  • What is the next insert design?
Jens' NaehKRAFT-Loop is the most innovative design I've seen in a while. I agree that diamonds/hexagons etc. are getting old. I personally am a fan of textures and weaves. I'd like to see cloth make a comeback in custom interiors.
  • Different options for steamers.
I don't have a Jiffy but I can give you some useful tips I have for using my Hoffman steamer. Always be moving the wand. Don't leave it in the same place too for more than a couple seconds. On seat covers, insert the wand behind the cover. Don't steam it from the face. On Convertible tops/windows do what Jack said. I throw a piece of vinyl over the area and insert the wand between the vinyl and the convertible top. Never press the wand directly on the top though because you can easily scratch it.
  • Different options for steamers.
Yea they definitely help a lot on convertible tops.
  • Console hinges
That a good idea Al. I like that a lot, especially for trunk panels. Thanks for sharing
  • Different options for steamers.
I also prefer the Hoffmans. I have 2 that are still going strong after 15 years of constant use. If I remember correctly, they cost around $1500 but they are definitely worth the investment.
  • Seat Heaters
I've seen that too. That's why I use the carbon fiber elements which they say don't catch fire. So far I've had good luck with them
  • Leather lacing
    Great tip! Thanks
  • Padded ultra leather?
You should cut a piece of the material and either give it in person or mail it to your upholstery suppliers. I've done that in the past. The pros who work at these warehouses have a really good eye for matching material and they're always willing to help. Contact Albright. They're very friendly and helpful.
  • Plastic welds
What do you guys do about the mirrors on sunvisors? Some of them use the same method of a melted down plastic stud but it's much too small to screw it back together like you would a door panel insert. I recovered a pair for an early 2000s Honda Civic and had to eliminate the mirrors altogether. I do my best to save the mirrors whenever I can by tucking the material under them but sometimes I'm forced to eliminate them.
  • Plastic welds
I do the same as the others. Cut the heads off and reattach with a self tap screw.
  • Seat Heaters
    I get mine from Donmar.com
  • Not auto but interesting...
Wow that's bizarre. I dig it though!
