• Dash pad reupholster
Wow very nice job! I'm impressed you were able to wrap that with out any seams. What vinyl did you use?
  • Dash pad reupholster
Yeah I know that's super frustrating when customers don't value your skills and time. If he wanted a customer wrapped dash I probably would have recommended we buy a new one and wrap the new one. However sometimes new repops are not available.

I think your making great progress at only 11 hours. Thats a lot of work to repair those and make them look good. You did a really nice job on the fiber glass. I probably would have estimated around 23+hrs to get that thing fixed and wrapped. With no guarantee it wouldn't take longer than 23 hrs.
  • Dash pad reupholster
I only do those for time and material. No set estimates. Those can be extremely time consuming.
  • Headliners
I couldn't agree more! That's why enjoy upholstery so much.
  • Headliners
Gotcha. In my experience when doing custom shaped headliners people use a lot of different materials to get the result they are looking for. Fiberglass, wood and chip board, metal, ect. really just depends on what materials you are most comfortable with using.

Here is a good how to article that might help. http://www.how-to-build-hotrods.com/headliner-installation.html

Also there is a really good section on this in Ron Mangus's book called Custom Auto Interiors. Great book I highly recommend it. https://amzn.to/3qztUi0

    hope this helps!
  • Patterning techniques
I believe the stuff they are using in the video for patterning is called Transfer Paper. Its what is used to apply large vinyl stickers. I like the idea of carpet shield. Ill have to try that out.
  • Stitches Showing
I think your using too big of a needle. Also what needle point type are you using?
  • Auto upholstery velcro hold down
Just curious... What are you guys using to glue these back on to the foam?
  • Headliners
If your talking about flat headliner boards in old trucks I usually use 1/8" abs
  • Where to find needles?
What needle system does your machine use? All my machines use 135x17 needle system. I purchase needles from either the thread exchange or Relicate Leather. I always use GROZ-BECKERT
  • Cessna aircraft seat question..
Great! Thank you so much @Joe Chiaramonte! I'm purchasing all the material from Douglass interior products. I think they provide burn certs with all their materials.
    Thanks for all the help!

Haha! Ill make sure not to make a mess of the glue.
  • Cessna aircraft seat question..
    Awesome! Thank you Jesse!
  • Cessna aircraft seat question..
Hi I'm working on my first airplane interior. Thanks for all the helpful information!

I use Coats Ultra Dee Bonded polyester thread and DAP Weldwood Landau top contact cement in my automotive interiors. Are these products suitable for small personal air planes?
  • New Book
Congratulations! I can imagine how much work went in to making that book.
  • Thread size?
I use 92 for pretty much everything.
  • stuffed cotton pleates.
I wasn't offend at all. Sorry if it seemed that way. Glad you like the channel!
Next time Im doing some stuffed tuck and roll. Ill do some experiments and see if I can get it to work the way your describing.
  • stuffed cotton pleates.
    Hey Warren!
That was actually my video. I'm not sure what you mean by bunching when sliding across the seat.
The reason for the added 3/8 is because the base material controls the finish width of the pleats. I haven't found a way to prevent this because no mater what once you fill it with cotton the base rounds out a little causing the pleat width to shrink as well as the entire section. I haven't had any problems with bunching.

Id love to hear how others have approached cotton stuffed tuck and roll. I know there are multiple ways its done. This is just the way I have figured out how to do it.
  • How to approach businesses? Especially boat places.
Just walk in with a smile and business cards. Tell them your in the area and what you do. Usually you want to talk to the service manager but they will usually direct you to the right person to talk to. If they already have someone the work with make sure to ask "Can I leave a card with you in case they are ever too busy for a project you have." Also If you offer pick up and drop off service that is a big selling point.
  • Corners
Steaming the inside of that seam before you install the cover will help a lot.
Also some times on tight radius's like that I have had good luck trimming back the seam allowance to a little less than 1/4". Ive never had a problem with the seam coming apart from trimming back the seam allowance. Don't cut too closet though or you will cause problems.
  • Continuing Education

You you have a good memory! Yes it was Young Guns. I was young and crazy back then and learned a lot really quickly about running a business. Unfortunately thing didn't work out between me an my partner and the business.

Thanks! Yes all the courses and videos have been a lot of work. But seeing all the positive comments from people makes it all worth it. I'm sure that it is the same for you as well. Best wishes to you and you channel as well! You have been really busy this year making new videos!
  • Pricing boats
Matt, That's a really interesting Idea. Ive never herd of anyone quoting by square inch. Do you find it works well? How do you adjust for interiors with lots of top stitching?
  • Headliner question
The only time Ill cover over the existing headliner is if the car is new. 2 years old max. That Tahoe headliner is already 5-6 years old. You don't want to risk your reputation putting your nice work over top of a headliner your not sure of.
  • Show off your latest custom upholstery work.
Here is one of my recent projects. Suede headliner in a 2006 BMW. For some reason the old glue on the sun visors was a disgusting mess! But I got em covered after a lot of clean up...

  • Steaming Leather
I'm not sure what he is using but I have used transfer tape. Its made for applying vinyl decals. Its basically like masking tape that comes in rolls like 6-12" wide.
