Just a thought, but the regional upholstery supplier should know better than anyone else. Reach out, introduce yourself and ask them to turn you onto local shops. As a potential customer, they'll want to help you out.
  • Air bag seats
I know I sound like a broken record here (sorry for that). But if you're gonna fix an airbag seam without the type of certified machinery and processes that seat cover manufacturers use, consider talking to a lawyer to get some language printed on your invoice that will protect you in the event it doesn't deploy.
  • Marine Threads
In addition to UV protection, you'll also want thread that's resistant to mildew, chlorine and bromine. Check out Albright's Supply, which carries a wide range of marine thread.
  • anyone know who trimmed this ??
@Chris Vining So we put a call out on The Hog Ring's IG stories, and got a response from Roy Castillo (@maddog702) who says HRH Designs in Las Vegas may have the answer for you: www.instagram.com/hrhdesignslv
  • anyone know who trimmed this ??
Gonna post it on our IG Stories to see if anyone can ID it.
  • anyone know who trimmed this ??
You could probably figure it out by pulling up the city/state the previous owner lived in and asking auto upholstery shops there. There aren't many shops per city/state.
  • fraudulent charges
This happened to me before when purchasing items -- not upholstery related -- online.

Not sure which online suppliers you buy from, but my advice would be to stick with big, well-known online suppliers and retailers. Buying items from small, unknown websites (like I did) is a recipe for disaster. Once they have your credit card information, you're at their mercy.

Hope you cancelled your card and cleared up the issue right away. Best of luck!
  • Glittery carpet
Oh man, this is a tough one. Trinidad has been long discontinued. Maybe SMS Auto Fabrics?
  • I made a foam cutting table
Like the saying goes: "Necessity is the mother of invention."

    Nice job Geoff!
  • Oldest shears you ever seen?

    *Picks up the phone*
"Hello. Yes, please pick up your car immediately."
"No, I will not be able to complete the job."
  • covering steering wheel air bags
Agree with the folks above. Don't mess with someone's steering wheel airbag.

God forbid they get into a crash and the airbag doesn't deploy -- you will get sued straight out of your shop and your home. It's not worth it.
  • Can anyone help me identify this machine
Hmmm not sure. But Brother offers support for all older models. Check out their Online Support Center. Maybe you can send one of their reps the photos and they can identify it.
  • How to measure a leather hide
Hydes Leather published a short how-to on measuring hides, which we wrote about. Check out our article: "Pro Tip: How to Measure Leather Hides."

  • Make your own tartan fabric
That's really interesting. I wonder if the fabric is vehicle quality.
  • Nostalgic auto trim ads
    That ad is AWESOME!!!
  • NC 1508NH
That's great to hear @Matt Sonnenburg! @Mal Maher and his NC team really are the best.

For those who don't know, the NC 1508NH is an extra heavy duty, walking-foot sewing machine. Check out this video for more details:

  • 3d printed fabric
Could be a great way to add 3D FX to pleats. Gottfried Upholstery in Saskatchewan, Canada, did something like this before -- but not through the use of a 3D printer (though I'm sure that would have made it a lot easier).

Check out: "Gottfried's 3D Dragon Scale Pleats."
  • Need Diamond Holed preferation
@Angel Shackleford, contact Aaron at Hydes Leather. They do custom perforation and can match most anything. Tell him you're a member of The Hog Ring.

Here's an article we wrote about the service: "Make Interiors Pop with Custom Perforation"
  • Best place to find parts
    Not endorsing this...

But my father, who is a veteran trimmer for 40+ years, says he used to soak rusted nuts, bolts and other metal parts in Coca-Cola overnight. Apparently it eats away the rust. (ugh, imagine what it does to your intestines!)

Found this short tutorial online: https://goo.gl/NbgxNE
  • headrest-shrinker
We gave one of these away in 2012. Trimmers love it.

Leather Seats will ship to the UK.
  • Helping Others
We are not competitors in this business. ... The work we do is individual, custom to the client and very specialized.

    I completely agree.

@Fred Mattson, your contributions to our craft are invaluable. From helping fellow trimmers with questions about projects, to writing articles we can all learn from, to publishing a book that will inspire the next generation of trimmer, you continue to go the extra mile to see this industry grow and thrive.

Thanks for being a great example to us all.

If you guys haven't picked up a copy of Fred's book, do so today! It's a must-read. Here's where you can buy it: https://goo.gl/mStCsb
