• Looking for pfaff h4?
Seems there aren’t many available and ones that are available are costly ($2500-3000). Were I to get a Pfaff today, I’d opt for brand new for $3500 at my door. I used Pfaff 145’s when you could find them for $400-500 used. I did just find an old Japanese made Consew 226RB-1 that purrs like a Pfaff for $500 but I’ve waited a decade for a deal like this to go around. Good luck in search!
  • Suede material
    Anything !
  • Jell seats
Bike seats are all about shape. Padding has very little to add to the equation except to compliment shape. I use the analogy of a horse saddle; not well padded but shaped for long rides. We do many seat mods without gel or “memory foam” (its ALL memory foam after all) and have a 99.9% customer satisfaction on mods and 100% on new seats.
  • Buying leather hides
We use Hide House in Napa, Ca. mostly. Nice hand with some automotive treatments. Have always seemed 10% shy. Add 20% for waste and you total 30%.
  • Uneven glue below leather
We use Titebond with spray gun and 3M headliner adhesive in aerosol. Light applications. Sometimes less is more!
  • Forgot to use poly thread on a boat seat but none of the thread is exposed
Throw away any organic thread and live worry free!
  • Copyright on Embroidering Logos
Most organizations will allow this but beware of professional sports teams (who do NOT)
We farm our embroidery out and the graphic artists know what not to copy. We generally do mostly boats and they seem to welcome the nod.
  • Staple into gelcoat
We can staple Thru gel coat and other polyester resins but not if fiberglass is present.
  • Making a new seat cushion
I like the “stacked” idea. Probably stronger too.
  • Custom Hidem?
Most Jobbers can make it or have it made.
  • How much to charge for re-carpeting a bass boat
We usually charge $1500 to 1800 and rarely make much profit. More of a service really, and an opportunity to sell some upholstery.
  • Pricing
    I get 20% waste per hide so a 45
sqft hide is 36 sqft usable. That equals slightly less that 3 yards of vinyl (about 40.5 sqft).
Thats $180 to 225 of leather vs $45 for vinyl
We get $600-700 for one bucket seat in vinyl and $1000-1100 in leather.
  • Time to upgrade sewing machine need feedback..
That is clone of the consew. I have found only 1 part that does not swap between the two. I am happy with mine.
I am told that Seiko was the original licensee in Japan after the war to make Singer clones that were the Consews of the past.
I was also told that this Seiko is the only machine still made in Japan with the others being made in China.
  • Soft Top Windows
For plastic windows the new window must be sewn in then the old one cut out. On glass windows we use quick set 2 part epoxy and 2 people. We glue about 6" at a time, securing it by hand and waiting for it to set. This can quite easily cost many hundreds and is usually done for smaller separations.
